During Zona Maco in Mexico City, Ole Ukena took over the upper floor of IKAL Men with SI, Y… YES, AND… Wall pieces and wearable works shared the space with live music, improvised poetry and drawing.
An art show inside a clothing store. Paintings and wall pieces hung alongside embroidered linen and jackets, bringing different forms of Ole’s work into one room.
A line could appear on the wall, return in an embroidered shirt and leave with the person wearing it. Art and fashion met through the works themselves.
The installation extended from the street-facing window into the upper floor. Inside, paintings, wall drawings and garments could be seen together, with room to move between them.
Room in motion
Walk past a jacket and a painting comes into view behind it. Move closer and the drawing becomes thread. Different works come together as you move through the room.
Paintings, drawings, linen sets and jackets carry the same visual language. Each medium changes how the line behaves, while the work remains recognisably part of the same conversation.
A line on the wall.
A line carried into the world.
Wall works, wearable art and an opening made together. SI, Y… YES, AND… brought the work and its visitors into the same room.
Temple Haze played live. Violinist Daniel Avi Schneider joined the performance.
Visitors offered words. Ole responded with improvised poetry, writing and drawing directly on the wall as the musicians played. Those words became lines and stories, with the people in the room helping to shape what happened next.
Produced and organised with Morta, from installation and practical production to the opening itself.
Live at IKAL
Live music, freestyle poetry and drawing became part of the exhibition. The opening left new marks on the wall, made in response to the people gathered there.
Ole’s father, Fokko, was there, along with Mimi Love, Morta and friends from Berlin and New York. People gathered among the works, listened, offered words and stayed for the opening.
The exhibition also marked a continuing relationship with IKAL: UKENA would remain available in the store after the show. The wearable works had a place in Mexico City beyond opening night.
